History of Machu Picchu
Often called the “Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu was unknown to the world until 1911, when American archaeologist Hiram Bingham visited nearby indigenous farmers and learned of the ancient city’s existence. Bingham went on to bring international attention to this discovery, and today, Machu Picchu is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Earth.This ancient city was essentially lost to outsiders for one key, fortunate reason. When Spanish conquistadors overran the surrounding area in 1532, as a mission of the Spanish Conquest, they didn’t realize Machu Picchu was there. Although abandoned upon the Conquest, the city is so well-hidden in the Andes that it survived colonization efforts completely untouched.
Most archaeologists believe the Incans constructed Machu Picchu around 1450. The advanced city was likely built as a luxurious estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti. It’s estimated that about 1,200 people could have inhabited the region, but many historians have also concluded that Machu Picchu was mainly used as a private retreat for Incan rulers.
Taking a Trip to Machu Picchu
When you take a private jet charter to Machu Picchu, you have the opportunity to personally see the stunning, advanced architecture developed by the ancient Incan Empire. Machu Picchu is made up of approximately 200 structures, divided into three distinct zones: religious at the top, agricultural at the bottom, and urban in the center. Things to Do Before you can see the city, you’ll have to get there. This is the most popular way to reach Machu Picchu from the city of Cuzco. It takes two to five days to hike the trail. Go prepared!
- Hike a different trail. Options include the Salkantay trek and the Choquequirao trek.
- Take a train from Cuzco or Ollantaytambo to the ancient ruins.

I made all of the arrangements for the charter flight for my boss and his family. I worked with Joel Thomas personally, who took the time with me to show the jet options available, all the while considering my boss's medical issues and care requirements. He emailed a jet comparison guide with photographs to view side-by-side so that I could make a wise and informed decision, and walked me through them over the phone. He was determined to provide the best possible experience for everyone. Joel made it all so easy, and it was clear after conversations with him that he has a heart for people and genuinely cares about their needs. I ordered in-flight catering, over the phone, which could not have been any easier. The food was plentiful and exceptional! My boss called me the next day asking that I inquire as to who the local caterer was that supplied the food, as he wants to make sure that we use them in the future. They staged all of the food on beautiful white platters that looked classy and elegant, as though it was all prepared for red carpet guests. And every selection was freshly prepared that day and over the top in flavor! The pilot was very nice and personable and clearly cared about the comfort and safety of his passengers. The plane was extremely comfortable and very luxurious. The seating was perfect for the six of them and their cat, Molly! I received a call the next day from my boss's grown daughter, and all she did was rave about how it was first class all the way! She said I always do such a great job. LOL! It was Joel and the Stratos team that did all the work! My part was easy! Ohhh, and Joel also went out of his way to arrange for ground transportation upon their flight's arrival. I can say from personal experience over the years, that flying does not get any better than going first class with Joel Thomas and his team at Stratos Jet Charters. I want to thank them for making me look like the best assistant ever!!

Worked with Kerry Hill and as always, she delivered excellent service. First date departure had to be delayed due to a mechanical issue with the aircraft and she kept me well informed. When the revised departure date came, she worked continuously to get a hangar for the aircraft in order to help avoid costly de-icing then next morning. We were very disappointed in the catering service. The lobster was undercooked and the sevruga caviar we ordered turned out to be lumpfish. Which we did not eat. We intended to take all the food to our home with the lobster, which we were going to cook to make it suitable to eat, but when we arrived home discovered that our food had not been unloaded from the plane. The only thing we ate on the plane was a small piece of the lobster.
