Historic Jet Charter to Gettysburg National Military Park
One of the best jet charter trips you can take is a jet charter to Gettysburg National Military Park, where you’ll walk the same grounds that soldiers trooped over during the historic Battle of Gettysburg. Fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1863, this battle was the bloodiest fight of the Civil War with 51,000 casualties. Often referred to as the “High Water Mark of the Confederacy”, it was also a turning point in American history, leading to President Lincoln’s famed Gettysburg Address. When you take a jet charter to Gettysburg, you have the opportunity to explore this well-preserved piece of U.S. history. The Park covers nearly 6,000 acres, and is dotted with more than 1,400 monuments and markers.
Things to Do at Gettysburg National Military Park
One of the most popular sites within the park is the Museum and Visitor Center. The center was built in 2008 to make Civil War history come alive through exhibits and interactive experiences. The facility features a 24,000 sq. ft. Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War, a gallery with the famous Cyclorama Painting, two theaters that show an intriguing film on Gettysburg (narrated by Morgan Freeman), classrooms, a library, a bookstore, and the Refreshment Saloon, which offers Civil War-era foods and recipes. Most travelers who take a jet charter to Gettysburg start at the Visitor Center, because here is also where you can sign up for a tour of the battlefield. There are four main ways to tour this historic site:
- In a private vehicle with a Licensed Battlefield Guide
- By guided tour bus with other visitors
- Commercial bus tour
- Self-guided (or CD-guided) tour
A tour of the battlefield will take you through key battlefield locations, including Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, Culpa’s Hill and Cemetery Ridge. During your trip to Gettysburg, you can also walk with a trained ranger through Gettysburg National Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 3,500 Union soldiers who died in the Battle of Gettysburg. This is also where Lincoln gave his Gettysburg address five months after the battle. The cemetery was designed as a wide semi-circle by landscape architect William Saunders. At the center sits the grand Lincoln Monument, out from which radiate the cemetery’s different sections. The sections are divided by state, with smaller states in the inner areas, and larger states in the outer areas. Numerous smaller monuments have been built in these sections as well. Aside from these major attractions, the Gettysburg National Military Park offers campfire programs, educational activities for children, and special battle walks during the summer. Outside the Gettysburg National Military Park, there is plenty more to see around Gettysburg, PA. Walk around the town of Gettysburg, and you’ll see surviving signs of the war. At 11 York Street, the former Wills-Tyson building still has artillery projectile lodged in a wall. Bullet holes are also visible in the bricks of Farnsworth House on Baltimore Street.
