With a historical site named the Bucket of Blood Street, you know a stop in Holbrook is going to be interesting.
A jet charter airport in Holbrook takes visitors to the edge of the Petrified Forest National Park. The forest gets its name from the petrified logs that are strewn throughout it. Wander through the fallen ancient trees that are almost solid quartz on a variety of walking trails. The Crystal Forest, Giant Logs, and Long Logs loops pass by an ancient log-jam and offer views of the Painted Desert.
The Painted Desert is 150 miles long, and made of colorful, striped hills. Running from the Grand Canyon into Petrified Forest National Park, the desert was sculpted by the Chinle Formation, over 200 million years ago.
But back to that street… In the 1880s, Holbrook was part of the Wild West where gunfights were part of the norm. The street stands as a symbol of the gun slingin’ that took place all those years ago.
Now, Holbrook is a nostalgic stop on Route 66, where whitewashed concrete teepees stand tall, with vintage cars parked out front. Stay at the Wigwam Village for a night before you take the self-guided walking tour through town, where some of that Wild West history seeps in.
