Sitting at the base of the Askinuk Mountains less than a mile from the mouth of the Kun River lies Scammon Bay, Alaska. This small village was named after the Chief of Marine of the Western Union Telegraph Expedition, Charles Scammon, who later went on to discover the grey whale nursery lagoons on the Baja Peninsula. However, his discovery led to the near extinction of these majestic creatures by commercial whalers.
Scammon Bay was formally incorporated in 1967, and as of 2000, less than 500 residents call this area home. Visitors flying to the jet charter airport in Scammon Bay are typically only in the region for a short time as it’s not typically capable of hosting tourists. This airport is typically treated as a springboard for exploring other Alaskan communities.
The Scammon Bay Airport stretches across 103 acres and sits at just 14 feet above sea level. The runway is just 3,000-feet long and the surface is covered in gravel. These conditions limit the aircraft able to safely land at this airport; however, there are several smaller aircraft available for charter that can. There is also a seaplane landing area here that caters to turboprops equipped with floats.
