Heading north, Whale Pass is the last stop on the Prince of Wales Island highway. Whale Pass is located on the eastern side of the island where the rugged beauty will most definitely take your breath away. Nestled among the trees are fish, wildlife, lakes, caves, and so much more. No matter which part of the island you find yourself at, unplug and breath in the freshest air around.
Avid fisherman will appreciate the bountiful fishing Whale Pass provides. If you’re planning on visiting, be sure to book a halibut or salmon fishing charter. Local guides are experts at finding fish and will know all the tips and tricks for hooking a big one (or three!).
If you’d like to get up close and personal with some of the bears that call Whale Pass home, head to Dog Salmon Fish Pass Wildlife Viewing Site. This safe viewing perch offers glimpses into the habitat of the black bears of Prince of Wales Island. The bear activity is best enjoyed mid-July through August when they spend their time catching fish in the river.
While you’re viewing the bears, be sure to save some time to stop by the fish ladder, or the fish pass. If you time it just right, you may be able to watch the fish travel upstream to their spawning grounds.
