Situated on the head of Wood River and on the southwest end of Lake Aleknagik, the community of Aleknagik is an outdoorsman’s paradise. Traditionally used as summer fish camps, Wood River and Lake Aleknagik play host to some of the most avid anglers and hunters. Until recently, the only road into and out of the area was passable during the summer season only. Now, the road in and out has been upgraded and maintained so that it may be used all year long.
The region received its name through a series of unfortunate events. In fact, Aleknagik actually means ‘Wrong Way Home.’ The community was given this moniker when the early inhabitants returning to their homes along the Nushagak River got lost and ended up in what is now called Aleknagik. This was largely due to the fact that when the fog rolled in, it was nearly impossible to avoid being swept up by the Wood River and carried over to Aleknagik Lake.
When you book a flight to the jet charter airport in Aleknagik, you’ll find yourself steps away from Lake Aleknagik State Recreation Site, which is often referred to as the Gateway to Wood-Tikchick State Parks. These parks provide acres upon acres of rugged Alaskan wilderness, perfect for exploring.
The most common way to reach this area is via floatplane. Currently, there is a state-owned airport with a 2,070-foot long runway located on the north shore. However, if you choose to land here, you’ll have to use a skiff to visit the town on the south shore, as there are no roads leading between the two shores.
