{"id":61679,"date":"2017-01-18T22:17:24","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T22:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stratosjets.com\/?p=61679"},"modified":"2023-11-23T10:27:53","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T10:27:53","slug":"glossarysigmet-air-charter-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stratosjets.com\/glossary\/sigmet-air-charter-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"SIGMET"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SIGMET is an abbreviation for the term \u2018significant meteorological information.\u2019 In aviation, it is an advisory issued in times of severe weather that poses a significant risk to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stratosjets.com\/why-stratos\/safety\/\"><strong>safety<\/strong><\/a> of ALL aircraft, including private air charters.<\/p>\n<p>There are two different types of SIGMET:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-convective<\/li>\n<li>Convective<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Non-convective vs Convective SIGMETs<\/h2>\n<p>Non-convective SIGMETs are the less dangerous of the two. However, they can still pose a risk to smaller aircraft, such as a Citation Mustang charter, or other light jets used for private air charters. A weather forecaster will issue a SIGMET if the weather event is significant and affects an area of at least 3,000 square miles. This could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe non-convective turbulence<\/li>\n<li>Severe icing<\/li>\n<li>Widespread dust or sandstorms<\/li>\n<li>Volcanic eruption and ash clouds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In most cases, if the weather event is significant enough to trigger instrument meteorological conditions over a widespread area, the forecaster will issue a non-convective SIGMET for safety reasons.<\/p>\n<p>However, if\u00a0any of these conditions are\u00a0result of adverse convectional weather, such as a severe thunderstorm, the warning will be designated as a convectional SIGMET. Other weather events that can result in a convectional SIGMET include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe hail (3\/4 inch in diameter, or greater)<\/li>\n<li>Heavy winds (50 knots or greater)<\/li>\n<li>Tornados<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SIGMETs are typically issued for a period of three hours.
